Connecticut's Ice Missile Law

Before you know it winter will be here.  Remember the back-to-back snowstorms of Halloween 2011 and 2012? Yes, unfortunately, winter weather will be upon us soon and we will all be dealing with snow, ice, shoveling and dreaded freezing rain.

On January 1, 2014, a new law came into effect in Connecticut that should have an impact on whether or not you decide to clean off your car before heading out on the road. The law allows police to ticket any driver who operates their motor vehicle with snow and ice on it.

The law, originally passed in 2010 came into effect this year. It says that drivers  “shall remove any accumulated ice or snow from such motor vehicle, including the hood, trunk and roof of such motor vehicle, so that any ice or snow accumulated on such vehicle does not pose a threat to persons or property while the vehicle is being operated on any street or highway of this state.” Failure to comply with the law can result in a $75 fine.

If snow or ice comes flying off your vehicle and causes injury to a person, or property damage, non-commercial vehicles can be fined up to $1,000. The law also impacts commercial drivers. The penalties for truck drivers who fail to clean their truck can be up to $1,250, if any damage is caused.
